It appears that for some years past that the Europea

officer in charge has been allowed to occupy a matshed

on a small hill behind the Station in order to avoid

the summor heat. It also appears that 3 out of the

4 Indian constables were married men and were allowed

to sleep out of the station in Chinese houses rented

by them. At the time of the attack the European

sergeant was in bed in the matshed: 1 Indian Police

Constable was on duty in the street, armod with a

revolverz 2 1.P.Constables were off duty in their

rented quarters: the fourth Constable was on Station

Charge Duty. He was on a wharf in front of the station,

apparently unarmed. The robbers seem to have split

up into parties. While one party attacked the Station

other met and shot the I.P.C.in the street and one

of the I.P.C's.off duty who came out of his house

at the firing. Another shot the I.P.C. on the wharf.

The fourth Constable says that he slept through the

disturbance. The Luropean Sergeant, awakened by the

firing, ran down to the village and found the Station

empty and in a state of confusion. He then ran back

to his matshed to fetch his revolver and subsequently

Lot on the roof of a house overlooking the harbour

and fired some 20 rounds at the pirates, who at that

time were on board a launch seized in the harbour

and were about to get away having previously disabled

the machinery of another launch lying in the harbour.

They soon left taking the junk they had come in in

tow. They looted the village pawnshop before they

loft and took away a large quantity of jewellery and

two dead killed by their fire in the confusion. Pending

the enlistment of extra police, conceming which I

telegraphed
